At REV Group, Inc., we have a responsibility to future drivers — the ones who can’t yet reach the gas pedal. For that reason, our company is committed to protecting the environment, and with 23 vehicle brands under the REV name, we have an amazing opportunity to pave the road green in seven specialty vehicle markets. Here at REV, it’s more important than ever for us to manufacturer environmentally friendly vehicles powered by alternative fuel systems, like propane and compressed natural gas.
REV is a proud partner of CleanFUEL USA, an industry leader in propane autogas systems. We’re also GM’s only authorized OEM propane fleet vehicle system provider. You’ll find that many of our fleet products, like bus and emergency, offer these economical fuel systems, which is music to the ears of any business owner or municipality leader.
A gallon of propane autogas generally costs 40% less than a gallon of gasoline, which can save a fleet thousands of dollars every year. In southeast Michigan, the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) used federal grant money to invest in 61 propane-powered Champion buses in May of 2015. A SMART fact sheet estimates a total fuel savings of up to $24,000 per vehicle, or $1.7 million savings during the lifetime of the fleet.
But having a greener bank account isn’t the only perk to this alternative fuel source. Propane autogas produces less harmful greenhouse gas emissions, and thanks to domestic production of this fuel source, more American jobs are created every day.
At REV, we’re especially proud of Collins Bus Corporation, which developed the first Type A propane-powered school bus, built on the Factory GM Gas 6.0 chassis! As the largest builder of Type A school buses, we’re excited to think about the positive impact this will have on the environment.
Meanwhile, REV offers a second alternative fuel source. Our brands partner with Westport, the cutting-edge leader in compressed natural gas technology, to equip select vehicles with the Westport WING™ Power System.
Again, Collins is paving the way for Type A buses, offering this compressed natural gas option on its Ford E-450, 6.8L cutaway chassis. And because we know how important alternative fuel systems are to our other fleet industries, those in the terminal truck industry will find custom CNG systems at Capacity, where clients like UPS and FedEx look to these products to create operational efficiencies. Like propane, the price of compressed natural gas, also a domestic fuel source, is much lower than gasoline — as much as 80%.
But the monetary perks don’t stop at the pump.
Recently, Congress passed legislation resurrecting the federal $0.50/gallon alternative fuels excise tax credit, which includes natural gas and propane autogas. The legislation also extends the refueling property credit, allowing for a 30% credit of costs associated with the installation of refueling stations, up to $30,000.
With lower fueling prices and government tax incentives, it’s no wonder the U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts the vehicle consumption of natural gas will double from 2016 to 2025, and ICF International projects consumer propane sales to grow by about 800 million gallons (9 percent) by 2025. So if you haven’t thought about going green, perhaps now’s the time …
