English painter David Hockney once said, “Art has to move you. Design does not … unless it’s a good design for a bus.” Well, Mr. Hockney, that’s where we fit into the picture. For 2016, the REV Bus Group, one of the nation’s largest group of bus manufacturers, is rolling out some of the industry’s most innovative bus designs.
REV is taking a look at REV Bus Group’s latest design innovations in a two-part series, starting with Champion Bus’ newest suspension system.
Let’s talk about good design …
Champion Bus has introduced Squat®-kneeling technology, a middle-of-the-road suspension system, on the LF Transport® Ford E-450 and Chevrolet G4500 models. A feature sometimes seen in the ambulance industry, this four-point system is the first of its kind in low-floor shuttle buses.
As the vehicle kneels, this hydraulic lowering system can manually adjust the height of the bus floor in less than 5 seconds, dropping it as much as 8 inches — the lowest deck height in the industry. Thanks to good design, loading passengers is now easier.
Here’s a peek at how it works.
And unlike airbag suspension systems, the Squat system doesn’t utilize sensors, airbags or compressors — components that are typically prone to failure or are in need of constant maintenance. The system also utilizes the same hydraulic pump used in snow plows, meaning this technology is proven in the cold readily available.
And true to Champion’s signature commercial bus design, the LF Transport features a sleek design with classic front cap styling and large passenger-side cab windows, all in a mid-duty shuttle bus.
